VETERANS TO RECEIVE EMERGENCY FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

On April 7 Governor Rick Perry and the Texas Veterans Commission awarded a $1 million grant to the Texas Veterans of Foreign Wars Foundation to be distributed to veterans experiencing financial hardship. Veterans across the state are encouraged to apply for emergency assistance with mortgage and rent payments, food assistance, utility payments and other basic needs.

Through this grant, financial assistance is provided to veterans, spouses, dependent parents and children, and surviving spouses on an emergency basis. To qualify to receive this assistance, the "emergency" must be a situation that arose unexpectedly, created an immediate need for financial assistance, and was not caused or created by unreasonable conduct of the applicant.

To apply for emergency financial assistance contact the Texas VFW Foundation at 800-997-7096 or visit their website at hyyp://www.texasvfw.org.

236th MARINE CORPS BIRTHDAY

Originally founded on Nov. 10, 1775, the Marine Corps was composed mainly of infantrymen serving aboard Navy ships. They were primarily responsible for the security of the ship, offensive and defensive boarding parties. They also helped protect the ship's officers from mutiny. In 1921, Marine Gen. John A. Lejeune issued Marine Corps Order No. 47, Series 1921 that directed the history, traditions and mission of the Marine Corps to be read to all Marines on Nov. 10 to honor the service's creation. And in 1925, the first formal Marine Corps Birthday Ball was held in Philadelphia.

We very much hope that you will be able to join us for this celebration. This year the Marine Corps Coordinating Council of Houston -- Galveston will sponsor the 236th Birthday Ball for the United States Marine Corps on Saturday, November 5, 2011 at the JW Marriott Hotel by the Galleria, 5150 Westheimer Rd, Houston, TX, 77056, 713 961-1500. The Guest of Honor will be General James T. Conway USMC (Ret) 34th Commandant of the Marine Corps 2006 to 2010. This year's festivities will start with a Social Hour Cash Bar at 1800 hours. At 1900 the Houston Highlanders will lead us into the dining area with their Bagpipes for the Cake Ceremony performed by our Houston area Marine Corps recruiters. This will be followed by a Three Course Dinner including a Chicken Entrée. We will then have the Music of the NITEBEAT for dancing from 2100 until 2400.Tickets are $65 each, fill out the TICKET SUMMATION attached and mail to MCCC Houston, 12620 FM 1960 W, Ste A-4 #104, Houston, TX 77065. Accommodations will be available at the JW Marriott Hotel for a special rate of $109.00. For a reservations call 713 961-1500 and mention that it is for the Marine Corps Coordination Council, Marine Corps Birthday Ball.

We are looking for interested parties to sponsor a Marine's attendance at this year's Birthday Ball. We have a number of deserving young Marines just starting out in their Marine life that, without your generosity, will not be able to attend this year's Ball. As a sponsor, your name will appear in the Souvenir Commemorative Program that each attendee receives at the Ball. If you would like to sponsor a Marine, please complete the SPONSORSHIP CARD attached and return it and your contribution to MCCC Houston, 12620 FM 1960 W, Ste A-4 #104, Houston, TX 77065. STATUE PLANNED FOR "CHESTY" PULLER

A group of retired Marines plans to erect an 11 -foot high. 14.000- pound monument to the late LtGen. Lewis B. "Chesty" Puller in Scmper Fidelis Memorial Park not far from the John A. Lejeune monument already on the museum's grounds near Marine Corps Base. Quantico. VA.
The design, approved by the Corps in September, features a six- foot bronze statue of the tarried general wearing binocular and a helmet while holding his trademark smoking pipe. An anonymous radioman crouches by his side.
Are monument depicts Puller during the World War II era said former LCpl. Terry Jones the sculptor selected to craft it. Palm trees common in the Pacific, where Puller led Marines in epic battles, were including in an early sketch but scrapped so the monument won't he associated with just one war, said Retired 1stSgt. Jim Barnett who is spearheading the campaign to raise money for the monument. So far, his group has raised about $20.000 of the S260.000 it needs.
"It kind of fits with what he was wearing in the World War II campaigns and the Korea campaign, where he did such a good job pulling out of the [Chosin] Reservoir," Barnett said.
The monument's live-foot high granite base will memorialize Puller with several plaques. including one engraved with a saying introduced to Marines in boot camp: "Goodnight "Chesty" wherever you are."
