236th MARINE CORPS BIRTHDAY
Originally founded on Nov. 10, 1775, the Marine
Corps was composed mainly of infantrymen serving aboard Navy
ships. They were primarily responsible for the security of the
ship, offensive and defensive boarding parties. They also helped
protect the ship's officers from mutiny. In 1921, Marine Gen.
John A. Lejeune issued Marine Corps Order No. 47, Series 1921
that directed the history, traditions and mission of the Marine
Corps to be read to all Marines on Nov. 10 to honor the service's
creation. And in 1925, the first formal Marine Corps Birthday
Ball was held in Philadelphia.
We very much hope that you will be able to
join us for this celebration. This year the Marine Corps Coordinating
Council of Houston -- Galveston will sponsor the 236th Birthday

VETERANS
TO RECEIVE EMERGENCY FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
On April 7 Governor Rick Perry and the
Texas Veterans Commission awarded a $1 million grant to the Texas
Veterans of Foreign Wars Foundation to be distributed to veterans
experiencing financial hardship. Veterans across the state are
encouraged to apply for emergency assistance with mortgage and
rent payments, food assistance, utility payments and other basic
needs.
Through this grant, financial assistance
is provided to veterans, spouses, dependent parents and children,
and surviving spouses on an emergency basis. To qualify to receive
this assistance, the "emergency" must be a situation
that arose unexpectedly, created an immediate need for financial
assistance, and was not caused or created by unreasonable conduct
of the applicant.
To apply for emergency financial assistance

STATUE
PLANNED FOR "CHESTY" PULLER
A group of retired Marines plans to erect
an 11 -foot high. 14.000- pound monument to the late LtGen. Lewis
B. "Chesty" Puller in Scmper Fidelis Memorial Park
not far from the John A. Lejeune monument already on the museum's
grounds near Marine Corps Base. Quantico. VA.
The design, approved by the Corps in September, features a six-
foot bronze statue of the tarried general wearing binocular and
a helmet while holding his trademark smoking pipe. An anonymous
radioman crouches by his side.
Are monument depicts Puller during the World War II era said
former LCpl. Terry Jones the sculptor selected to craft it. Palm
trees common in the Pacific, where Puller led Marines in epic
battles, were including in an early sketch but scrapped so the
monument won't he associated with just one war, said Retired
1stSgt. Jim Barnett who is spearheading the campaign to raise
money for the monument. So far, his group has raised about $20.000
of the S260.000 it needs.
"It kind of fits with what he was wearing in the World War
II campaigns and the Korea campaign, where he did such a good
job pulling out of the [Chosin] Reservoir," Barnett said.
The monument's live-foot high granite base will memorialize Puller
with several plaques. including one engraved with a saying introduced
to Marines in boot camp: "Goodnight "Chesty" wherever
you are."

MARINE FOR LIFE PROGRAM
The Marine for Life program
provides sponsorship for Marines that honorably leave active
service and return to civilian life. In short, for Marines leaving
active duty honorably, the Marine For Life Program acts as a
bridge between the Corps, the community, and the workplace. Marines
are trained in fields as varied as communications, electronics,
law enforcement, firefighting, information technology, human
resources, administration, logistics, maintenance, air traffic
control, supply, and finance. Through Hometown Links located
in cities across the nation, Marines find help matching their
skills to civilian jobs. Additionally, the program helps transitioning
Marines quickly integrate into a network of resources that can
assist them with needs ranging from continuing education, housing,
veterans issues, child care, and legal assistance among others.
The goal is to make each Marines transition from military service
as positive an experience as possible.
There is a monthly Houston Marine Networking Luncheon for employers,
transitioning Marines and anyone who is part of the Marine family
in Greater Houston. This event is held the 3rd Thursday of each
month at Masraff's www.masraffs.com . If you are interested in participating
or learning more, contact Captain Daniel Rofriguez or GySgt Thorin
Moser at m4lhouston@gmail.com. The Marine For Life Program also
has an online job board for employers to post jobs that transitioning

FISHER
HOUSE HERO MILES
The Fisher House organization uses more
than a million frequent flyer miles per week in distributing
free round-trip airline tickets to families of war-wounded servicemembers
being treated in military and Veterans Affairs medical facilities
across the country. To date, the program has distributed more
than 4,000 tickets, using more than 150 million frequent flyer
miles. Fisher House gets the millions of frequent flyer miles
through "Operation Hero Miles." The program has been
expanded to wounded servicemen and women being treated at major
military and Veterans Affairs medical centers across the country.
Those who have approved convalescent leave may be given a free
round-trip airline ticket to visit loved ones if they're not
eligible for government-funded airfare. Family members are also
eligible for the free tickets. Requests for tickets have to originate
from a servicemember and must be forwarded to Fisher House by
a hospital social work staff member, family assistance center
or service casualty office. The unused frequent flyer miles come
from private and corporate donations. For more information on
the program or how to donate your unused earned miles, visit
